Frequently Asked Questions (Freezer Issues)
If your freezer feels cool but not fully frozen, it may be due to dirty condenser coils, a weak compressor, a failing evaporator fan, temperature set too high, or door seals letting warm air in. Freezers should hold around 0°F (-18°C) to keep food safely frozen.
Excess frost is often caused by a failing defrost system, a worn or torn door gasket, or the door being left open too long. Warm, humid air turns into frost on the evaporator coils and inner walls, eventually restricting airflow and cooling performance.
Clicking, buzzing, rattling, or grinding sounds can come from the compressor, evaporator fan motor, condenser fan, or ice build-up rubbing against the fan blades. Any sudden change in sound should be checked by a technician. For combined fridge–freezer systems, our refrigerator sound guide can also help you understand what’s normal and what’s not.
Leaks are usually related to a clogged defrost drain, cracked water line (on ice-maker models), or heavy frost melting and pooling. If you see puddles inside or under the appliance, it’s best to have it inspected. You can review our leak and freeze guide for more details.
If the freezer temperature is set too low, or if a sensor, thermostat, or control board is malfunctioning, your unit may run longer than needed. This can over-freeze food and cause freezer burn. Proper packaging and correct temperature settings help protect your food.
Constant running can be caused by dirty condenser coils, low refrigerant charge, a failing compressor, poor door seals, or frequent door opening in hot rooms like garages. An overpacked freezer can also restrict airflow and make the system work harder than it should.
If your freezer is above 0°F (-18°C) for extended periods, food quality and safety can be affected—especially meat, seafood, and frozen prepared meals. It’s best to have the unit inspected quickly and avoid refreezing food that has fully thawed.
Yes. Our technicians are trained and equipped to work on modern R600a (isobutane) systems and older R134a freezers. We follow proper recovery, leak detection, and charging procedures. You can learn more about the differences in our article on R600a vs R134a refrigerants .
Manual-defrost freezers should generally be defrosted whenever ice build-up reaches about 1/4 inch (6 mm) or more. For frost-free models, it’s still a good idea to wipe door gaskets, clean spills, and vacuum condenser coils at least once or twice a year to keep performance strong.
Keep the unit level, avoid blocking air vents, clean the condenser coils regularly, and make sure the door seals are tight. Try not to overload the freezer, and avoid storing it in extreme temperature environments unless it’s rated for garage use. For general appliance care, see our top appliance care tips .
